Getting Ready for the Interview

Even though you may already be in your first “official” job as a veterinarian, you will probably work at several other positions throughout your career. Here is a list of simple but essential tips to ensure a successful interview:

  1. Dress for success – professional attire is expected.
  2. Research the practice and veterinarian prior to the interview. Check their Web site, google the doctor, etc.
  3. Prepare a list of questions for the veterinarian – show that you are prepared (i.e. after hours emergencies, support staff, etc.).
  4. Have two or three special interests that you bring with you to expand the practice. Show that you will generate income that will help cover your future salary.
  5. At least one working interview is a must. Be sure to talk to other employees, check available medications and equipment, and review medical records.
  6. Be aware that the last thing discussed is typically salary. Be knowledgeable about different salary methods such as:
  • Flat Salary
  • Commission
  • Production Based Salary (a combination of Flat and Commission)

After the interview, be sure to follow up with a thank you letter acknowledging the interview and stating your interest in pursuing the position.
